Macromedia has updated Director Shockwave Studio, the authoring software used to create Shockwave content, to version 8.5.1 and told MacCentral that a native Mac OS X version of the widely distributed Macromedia Shockwave Player will be available later this month, probably Jan. 22. The file size should be approximately 3MB.

Shockwave Assault (originally released as Shock Wave on the 3DO) is a science fiction combat flight simulation video game developed by Advanced Technology Group and published by Electronic Arts.The player takes on control of a futuristic plane to defeat many extraterrestrial ships and tripods. The plane's main weapons are lasers and rockets.

The free update to the studio adds anti-aliasing support (both hardware and software-based) for 3D imaging and Windows XP compatibility. Anti-aliasing improves the visual quality of 3D objects by adjusting the pixels to eliminate 'jaggies' and soften the contrast between objects for a smoother look. Anti-aliasing support is also included in the new version of the Shockwave Player. This support is something users have been asking for, Miriam Geller, senior product manager for Director and Shockwave Player, told MacCentral.

'Anti-aliasing enables improved visual quality for 3D content,' she said. 'This is especially important for application areas such as merchandizing. Since Shockwave Player will soon support Mac OS X playback natively, this means that Mac users running Mac OS X 10.1 and higher can view all of their favorite Shockwave entertainment and learning applications.'

Shockwave Player makes up 44 percent of the 3D player market. Over 40 million users have installed the 3D-enhanced Shockwave Player, according to Macromedia.

What's more, Macromedia has also announced that support for its W3D Software Development Kit (SDK) program continues to grow. More than 50 companies have signed up, including 3ds max, Maya and Lightwave.

'3D has been sort of a disparate industry so there needs to be lots of support to make 3D utilities and technologies successful,' Geller said.

What of a Mac OS X native version of Director Shockwave Studio? It's coming, though no timetable has been set, she added.
